Local Shrine
The Time of Troubles & Era of Upheaval
Inspired By Ed Greenwood

The small stone shrine of Beliard has stood at the heart of the settlement for generations, offering the people of the Dessarin Valley a quiet place to seek comfort, guidance, and peace. Unlike the great temples found in cities such as Waterdeep or Triboar, this humble sanctuary is not dedicated to any single deity. Instead, it serves as a house of worship open to all the gods of Faerûn, welcoming followers of every faith without preference or distinction.

Built from rough gray stone quarried from the surrounding hills, the shrine's modest exterior gives little indication of the warmth within. Soft light streams through colorful stained-glass windows during the day, while rows of candles illuminate the sanctuary long after the sun has set. The shrine is cared for by a resident priest along with several devoted villagers who volunteer their time to maintain the building.

Their role is not to champion one faith over another, but rather to ensure that every visitor—whether they honor Chauntea, Tymora, Lathander, Silvanus, Helm, or any of the countless other deities of Faerûn—finds a welcoming place to pray. Small icons and symbols representing many of the gods can be found throughout the shrine, allowing worshippers to offer prayers according to their own beliefs. Fresh flowers, polished brass candlesticks, and carefully tended furnishings reflect the pride the people of Beliard take in preserving this shared place of devotion despite their modest means.

Throughout the tenday, the shrine serves as both a spiritual refuge and a gathering place for the community. Farmers often stop by before heading to their fields to ask Chauntea for a fruitful harvest, merchants preparing to travel the Long Road might leave a small offering to Waukeen or Tymora, while hunters entering the nearby wilderness whisper prayers to Mielikki or Silvanus. Weddings, funerals, blessings for newborn children, and prayers for safe journeys are all held beneath the same roof, regardless of which deity the family honors. In a frontier settlement where cooperation is essential for survival, the shrine reflects the unity of the community more than any single faith.

Though it lacks the grandeur of the great cathedrals found elsewhere along the Sword Coast, the shrine possesses a quiet dignity that leaves a lasting impression upon visitors. The flicker of candlelight across ancient stone walls, the peaceful silence between prayers, and the respectful coexistence of many different faiths create an atmosphere of uncommon serenity. Adventurers passing through Beliard often pause here to seek blessings before venturing into the Dessarin Valley, while the villagers find reassurance in knowing that whatever god they call upon, there will always be a place within these walls to offer their prayers.
